Choosing what to print is your most important decision! Here we summarize some of the important considerations for choosing photos for lamp shades.

Subject matter

With no film to purchase you probably have a large number of digital images. Cell phone photos work well on lamp shades. You need to weed out the bad ones then analyze the rest very carefully. You will be viewing this lamp shade for a very long time so choose a subject that brings back great memories -- a loved family member? A favorite vacation spot? Artistic composition? All of the above?

Our professional images

We have over 50 images available for you to use on your lamp shade at no additional cost. Most of our images are panoramas that wrap all the way around the shade.

Assembling photos for a shade

We recommend that you use the panorama mode available on most cell phone cameras. This produces a wide image that will wrap all the way around the shade. The width of the image you need is pi (3.14) times the diameter. If you have 3-5 regular photos, that works too. We can assemble them onto the shade folowing your request. Only one photo you want to use? We can repeat it several times.

Sharpness

Note that you need to choose images that are sharp. The best way to do this is to zoom in so the image fills your screen or more so you are seeing only a part of the image. Is the main subject in focus? Is there a blur from a moving subject or an unsteady camera? Can you see individual hairs in a portrait? Even the best photographers discard many of their images.

Lighting

Great lighting helps make a great image. For portraits, avoid direct flash or mid-day sun. Instead use available light, cloudy days, or open shade. For landscape scenes, best to shoot early or late in the day.

Retouch and edit

As part of the purchase price we will fix standard problems such as poor exposure, red-eye, and remove distracting objects. However, we can't restore detail in badly under- or overexposed parts of the image, or make sharp a blurry subject...more

Convert to black and white

Our printer makes excellent black-and-white prints that turn out completely neutral. We suggest you submit a color photo so we can optimize for black and white in Photoshop.
